About the Credential

The competency based certification process verifies possession of the skills and knowledge needed to safely perform the job of Medical Assistant in a doctor’s office, hospital, or other health care facility. The RMA certification exam tests the candidates’ knowledge related the field of medical assisting and combines it with other indicators of competence for specific Medical Assistant job function.

Administrative competencies seen in the front office. Areas of focus include reception duties, medical records management, bookkeeping, and accounting responsibilities.
Equivalent to MED 111 - Medical Office Procedures at the Connecticut Community Colleges.

Clinical Medical Assisting: 4 credits, lower division level
Essential clinical skills required of a medical assistant in a medical office to directly assist the physician in patient care. Focus is on vital signs, assisting in various types of exams, ECG recordings, basic pharmacology knowledge and administration of medication, and documentation in a medical record.

Insurance and Billing: 3 credits, lower division level
Health insurance terminology and practices, ICD 10 coding, CPT coding, and claim development.
Equivalent to MED 112 - Medical Insurance and Coding at the Connecticut Community Colleges.

Laboratory Principles for Medical Assistants: 3 credits, lower division level
Clinical laboratory competencies required of a medical assistant including sterilization procedures and sterile technique; specimen collection and handling of urine, blood, and cultures; and laboratory testing such as micro hematocrit, hemoglobin, glucose, and various types of urine testing.

Medical Assisting Externship: 4 credits, lower division level
Approved medical office experience in hands-on application of the administrative and clinical duties of the medical assisting profession. Requires 160 hours of supervision in a medical office.
Equivalent to MED 280 - Medical Assistant Practicum at the Connecticut Community Colleges.
