Certificate Programs and Credential Programs

Charter Oak's certificate programs and credential programs are perfect for professionals and adult learners seeking continuing education and career advancement opportunities.

The courses for our certificates and credentials are offered online in convenient accelerated 5-week or 8-week terms. Students do not need to be matriculated with the college.

Grades of C or higher must be earned in each certificate course. Certificate students are subject to our administrative withdrawal policy.

Alternate Route to Certification in Early Childhood Education (ARC)

Charter Oak State College offers an alternate route to the Connecticut Birth through Five teaching certificate (112 endorsement). This teaching certificate qualifies professionals to work in a variety of settings such as public preschools, Birth to Three Early Intervention services, and public school kindergartens.

Connecticut Director's Credential

If you are interested in taking the required Office of Early Childhood licensing course, click here.
Please note that the CT Director Credential is NOT required for OEC licensing and it should not be confused with the OEC licensing requirement (ECE 250).

This professional credential was created through a unique collaboration among Charter Oak State College, Connecticut Charts-A-Course, the Connecticut Department of Social Services (now under the CT Office of Early Childhood) and the Hartford Area Child Care Collaborative. This credential is issued through Charter Oak State College at three levels of proficiency. The credential acknowledges that, as a professional administrator of a program serving children, one has the knowledge, experience and competency in core areas of knowledge for directors.

Cyber Security Certificates

There are four Cyber Security certificates - Cyber Security Fundamental Certificate; Security Strategies Application Certificate; Cyber Security Investigation Certificate; Technical Security Administration Certificate. They are designed for the person who has a strong computer background, and is already working in the Cyber Security field and wants to enhance his or her skills.

This certificate for Direct Care Workers provides an overview of issues in aging and the main issues direct care workers will be facing. The certificate is designed to enhance clinical skills of direct care providers in long term care facilities, including front line workers, receptionists, and recreation facilitators. It also provides an avenue for health care providers to move into supervisory positions and/or to further their education towards advanced degrees.

The Certificate in Health Information Management is designed for students who have a bachelor's degree in anything other than Health Information Management who wish to qualify for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential exam administered by AHIMA. Charter Oak's online bachelor's degree in Health Information Management equips students with the health care knowledge and skills needed to manage patient data and improve patient care in today's health care environments. Knowledge of the electronic management of sensitive patient health information and health care organization revenue cycle management is critical for success in the health care field today. Anyone who works with infants and toddlers in a licensed child care center or licensed family child care program, including teachers in Early Head Start and other publicly funded programs will benefit from this certificate. This certificate will also allow you to earn 12 college credits toward an associate degree in early childhood education.

This certificate is designed for students who are interested in the profession of medical coding and wish to earn a medical coding credential from AHIMA or the AAPC. Charter Oak's online Certificate in Medical Coding equips students with the health care knowledge and skills needed to analyze and code patient data and improve reimbursement and data in today's health care environments. Knowledge of the electronic management of sensitive patient health information and health care organization revenue cycle management is critical for success in the health care field today. Our program is structured to provide a professional education with a comprehensive coding curriculum that includes a medical science foundation, and is guided by the principle of quality health care through quality information. This is a 21 credit certificate.

This professional credential, created in collaboration between Charter Oak State College and the Connecticut Parenting Education Network (CT-PEN), establishes consistent criteria for the knowledge, skills and experience required for parenting educators including home visitors, trainers, facilitators and parenting education coordinators. This credential is issued through Charter Oak State College at five different levels. The Credential acknowledges that, as a professional in the field, you have obtained the experience and competency in the core areas of knowledge for parenting educators and that you adhere to the CT-PEN Parenting Educator's Code of Ethics.
