How To Earn Undergraduate PLA Credit for Portfolios

Steps

  1. Successfully complete IDS 102 - Prior Learning Portfolio Development with a “C” or better.

  2. Consult with your Academic Counselor regarding the applicability to your degree plan for each portfolio course challenge.

  3. Submit your portfolio via email attachment(s) to the PLA Office at pla@charteroak.edu.

  4. Pay assessment fee if applicable.

Process

  • Review the current information about the Portfolio Program prior to each portfolio.

  • Consult with your Academic Counselor regarding the applicability to your degree plan for each portfolio course challenge.

  • Review current policy information in the online catalog and pay special attention to the Academic Policies and Regulations, Sources of Credit, and Portfolio Assessment

  • Log in to the Acorn student portal to access the current forms.

  • Portfolios must be submitted electronically from your Charter oak email to the PLA Office at pla@charteroak.edu and are not returned.

  • The assessment fee, if any, is posted to your account when the portfolio is forwarded to the faculty.

  • The first portfolio assessment is included with the IDS102 course fee if the portfolio is submitted to PLA Office for assessment within 30 days of the end of the IDS102 class.

  • Assessment fees are required for additional portfolios and must be paid for assessment to begin; current fee information is posted in the online catalog.

  • Portfolio assessment takes 2-3 months or more, depending upon faculty assessor availability and whether more information is requested.

  • Faculty assessors are assigned after receipt and administrative review of portfolios by the PLA Office and are asked to complete their assessments within 30 days of receipt of all portfolio review materials, including any additional information that may be requested and received.

  • You must respond within 30 days to any request for more information or the assessment process will end, with the final results based upon the last submission.

  • Submit your portfolio electronically as a pdf or MS Word attachment from your Charter Oak email.

    • Include your name and the course in the name(s) of the portfolio document(s).

    • If your portfolio submission contains multiple documents, you must include a numeral at the beginning of each document name to order them appropriately and ensure that the faculty assessor will receive and review them in the order you wish.

  • Credit will be posted to your transcript within 10-15 business days after any credit award.

  • All communications and results will be sent to your Charter Oak email.

Portfolio Contents

  1. Undergraduate Portfolio Cover Sheet form (from Acorn), fully completed.

  2. Undergraduate Portfolio Summary Sheet form (from Acorn), fully completed.

  3. Introduction describing how your experience has provided you with the opportunities to learn the course material.

  4. Narrative demonstrating how your knowledge is equivalent to each course topic / learning outcome and linking each piece of documentary evidence.

  5. Resume.

  6. Undergraduate Documentary Evidence List form (from Acorn), fully completed.

  7. Documentary evidence supporting your claim of having achieved each course learning outcome.
