About the Reviewed Program
The Patient Care Technician Program at Tunxis Community College is comprised of three components leading to separate certificates in Certified Nurse Aide; EKG Skills and Pulse Oximetry; and Phlebotomy Technician. Students who have successfully completed any separate component are eligible for the related credit.

Certified Nurse Aide: 4 credits, lower division level
This course of study provides instruction on utilizing a humanistic approach to provide basic care to people in a variety of health care settings. Students will understand how health care systems operate and will learn the skills necessary to function safely and efficiently in a health care setting. Students will learn the information and practical skills necessary for taking and passing the certification examination required by the state of Connecticut. The student is given the opportunity to practice selected skills in a college laboratory and in a clinical setting.
EKG Skills and Pulse Oximetry: 1 credit, lower division level
This course will teach the student the basic skills in administering a 12-lead EKG, including cardiac anatomy and function; appropriate skin preparation; proper lead placement; and identification of P, Q, R, S and T wave forms. Recognizing a normal versus abnormal electrocardiogram, prevent artifacts, and adapt to unusual patient situations will be discussed. This class also covers utilizing a pulse oximeter. The student will be instructed on the sensor placement and pulse correlation techniques to measure oxygen saturation accurately.
Phlebotomy Technician: 7 credits, lower division level
This course provides students with the theory and clinical knowledge to become a phlebotomist. Students will learn venipuncture and dermal puncture; anatomy and physiology; and medical terminology.
